Health: Laser Surgery Varicose Veins – Whats Going On
health

Using laser surgery varicose veins and the discomfort they cause can be significantly reduced or even eliminated. Called endovenous ablation, this treatment is minimally invasive and uses a laser to close large, tortuous veins in the lower leg. When the veins are closed, blood flow is diverted to healthy veins close by.

Varicose veins are caused by a number of things like standing or sitting for long periods of time, weakened valves in the lower leg, also known as a condition called venous insufficiency. Symptoms of venous insufficiency include; aching of the lower leg, edema, or swelling, sores called stasis ulcers or other skin problems like cellulitis, discoloration, or infection of the vein itself, called phlebitis.

Your doctor will use an ultrasound machine to locate and visualize the varicose vein and then a catheter will be inserted through a small opening in the skin into the vein. The laser is then directed into the vein and laser energy, or heat, is applied to the vein, causing it to close. The vein will shrink and be barely noticeable within a year of the procedure. The whole thing can be done in about an hour.

Laser surgery varicose veins is usually 100% effective in reducing or eliminating varicose veins and the discomfort they cause but in some cases more work may be needed if smaller veins continue to cause you problems. Some can get taken out using a procedure called phlebectomy or your doctor may choose to inject a liquid medication into them that will seal them off permanently. Either of these procedures will be performed after recovery of the original endovenous ablation procedure.

This procedure is performed by a board certified doctor called an Interventional Radiologist. An Interventional Radiologist specializes in minimally invasive treatments targeted to a specific area of the body, like varicose veins in the lower leg. Also known as image guided medicine, imagery from MRI, x-ray or CT scans is used to pinpoint the problem and figure out the least invasive way to solve it, fix it, or cure it.

Conditions that used to require full blown surgery can, today, be treated non-surgically by interventional radiologists on an outpatient basis. There is considerably less risk, less pain and less recovery time than with full blown surgery.

Since pricing of procedures depends on the procedure itself, talk to your doctor about what the procedure will cost. The cost of the procedure may be covered under your health insurance policy if your doctor has said it is medically necessary. Although most insurance providers will require you to participate in some therapy for three to six months before they will sign off on any surgery. Therapy includes wearing compression stockings, elevating your legs, getting regular exercise and losing weight.

If therapy is unsuccessful in relieving your pain, swelling, leg cramps, ulcers, and bleeding and an ultrasound scan confirms that you have venous insufficiency or reflux, then the insurance company should cover the laser surgery varicose veins procedure.

Health: Laser For Varicose Veins – Tips On Laser Surgery
health

Let’s talk about using a laser for varicose veins. Lasers have been used for many years to help get rid of spider veins but were not used to treat varicose veins of the leg for fear of rupturing the vein and causing bleeding. Treatment for spider veins is a non-invasive technique and considered cosmetic in nature therefore, not covered by insurance.

Recent developments in laser technology have expanded to laser for varicose veins treatment. The procedure is called endovenous laser ablation. Endovenous laser ablation is a minimally invasive technique used to treat superficial, larger, more tortuous, varicose veins. You can get it done right in the doctor’s office with only a topical anesthetic and go home the same day with just a band-aid to cover the small incision made to insert the laser into the vein.

The laser is inserted through the skin directly into the affected vein and the heat produced by the laser heats the vein and makes it collapse. The laser is removed and eventually the vein shrinks up and disappears. It will not even be visible to an ultrasound a year down the road.

The benefits of having this type of procedure done include not only the procedure being quick and easy but you will reduce the chances of having ulcers caused by the protruding vein and get relief from the achiness, swelling and heaviness feeling in the leg. blood circulation will improve to the leg and you will just feel better and have more confidence about how you look.

Endovenous laser ablation leaves very little scarring and any pain experienced can be controlled with over the counter pain medication like Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen. You will need to wear compression stockings for up to two weeks following the surgery.

Even though endovenous laser ablation is considered very safe and 98% effective in removing the varicose veins, it does have a recurrence rate of 7% after two years and though complications are very rare some things that can happen after the procedure are, numbness at the site, DVT, or deep vein thrombosis, (a blood clot in the leg), which can be prevented by following doctor’s orders and wearing the compression stockings for the length of time he specifies after the procedure.

Infection can be prevented by using an antibiotic ointment on the area where the small incision was made. Bruising is normal and will resolve on it’s own in a week to ten days.

If this seems like the right procedure for you, do yourself a favor and research doctors who specialize in the field in your area and pick the one you like the best. Make a list of questions and be sure to take it with you when you go for your first appointment.

Ask to see before and after pictures of previous patients. If the doctor is on the up and up he will gladly show off his work. Tell him you are interested in laser for varicose veins treatment and ask him to explain, in detail, the procedures he has available and then choose the one that is best for you and your condition.

Health: Is Collagen The Best Treatment For Acne Scars
health

Acne is among the most common skin conditions around the world. Though it is often most closely associated with adolescence, it can affect people of all ages. Some of you may have heard about the collagen, acne scars relationship and want to more about it. Before we do, let’s take a moment to explain a bit about how acne is formed in the first place. Typically, as the acne cyst is formed the neck around the sebaceous gland opens, and then gets filled with material that can’t escape through the pores. When this happens, the built up pressure causes the cyst to erupt, spreading the contaminants into the skin. In turn, the body calls on the white blood cells to battle these “invaders” and acne results.

After this happens, tissue loss (specifically in the form of collagen) follows. Once these cells are gone, the cells on top layer of skin do not get the nourishment they need from the internal mechanism. This is what ultimately leads to a slight collapse of the skin as a scar. When it comes to collagen acne scars take a few different forms. Pock marks (soft-edged and shaped like a saucer) or ice pick scars (narrow and deep) are two common forms. These affect men and women equally, and often appear on the face.

There is another factor that you be aware of as it relates to collagen and acne scars. The level of collagen the body produces changes as we get older, and that can have an effect on how visible scars are. The rule of thumb is that you lose 1% of your collagen each year after turning 40. This, along with less tone in the skin, leads to scars being more visible.

Okay, that brings us up to speed on most of what you need to know about the collagen acne scars connection. Knowing this, it comes as no surprise that collagen can also be used in treating scarring caused by acne. Acne scars typically come form long-lasting inflammation and infection of glands in the skin. This is noticeable as skin that is no longer smooth. If there are a lot of “craters” left by acne, then filling them in, possibly with collagen, may make the most sense. These fillers help to make the craters more even, which leads to smoother skin and scars being less noticeable.

While it would seem as though collagen fillers are an ideal solution, there is a catch: they are not permanent. Now, the good news is that they can last up to six months, so it’s not like you have to get the procedure done every few weeks. Whether or not collagen is the right choice will depend on what type of acne scars you have, as well as other factors. Other fillers are available, however, so be sure to discuss your various options with a qualified medical professional. In fact, anything you read here shouldn’t be thought of as medical advice, but rather as information to help you have a better discussion with your doctor.

Talk to your doctor and find out how the hormonal changes you will experience during your pregnancy are going to affect you because hormonal fluctuations can make your symptoms much worse and you should be prepared.

Hormonal fluctuations during pregnancy can trigger irritable bowel syndrome symptoms in women who have never experienced any symptoms before and the symptoms may or may not subside after the baby is born.

You may experience different symptoms during each trimester of your pregnancy and will have to make changes as you get further along. The most common symptom being constipation. The best way to relive constipation during pregnancy is to increase you fluid intake.

Carry a water bottle with you at all times and drink as much as you can during each day. This may mean you will be spending what seems like an eternity in the bathroom but if it helps control the other symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome; pregnancy won’t be so stressful.

Getting regular exercise can benefit your pregnancy as well, not only in relieving your constipation related to irritable bowel syndrome symptoms but staying in shape will make your delivery easier too.

If you find that your symptoms are not controlled by diet and exercise then you will need to discuss other treatment options with your doctor. Do not ever take any medication without the consent of your doctor. There are medications your doctor can prescribe but because the health of your baby is important your doctor may choose not to prescribe them and encourage you to deal with the symptoms as best you can until the pregnancy is done.

Health: Irritable Bowel Syndrome Information – Keeping Life Normal
health

If you have recently been diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome, information is available to help you manage this disorder so you can learn to control it and live a relatively normal life.

Although there is no known cause, doctors have determined that symptoms associated with irritable bowel syndrome may be related to what are basically crossed signals sent from the brain to the bowels themselves. These crossed signals affect how the intestines move. Other possible causes are related to allergies or intolerance to some foods, especially those containing gluten and dairy products.

Irritable bowel syndrome, a disorder of the intestines, causes abdominal pain, bloating, cramping, diarrhea or constipation. Other symptoms include mucous in the stool or a feeling of incomplete emptying of your bowels.

There is no way to know when you wake each morning if you will have a good day or a bad day. When you have a bad day it is called a flare and can be quite distressing. Flares can be triggered by the food you eat, increased stress levels, hormones changes or imbalances, and antibiotic treatment.

Irritable bowel syndrome is more common than you might think. Did you ever go out to eat at a fast food joint and within minutes after finishing your meal you had to run to the bathroom? Well, that was probably a mild form of irritable bowel syndrome. Most people have such mild symptoms that there is no need to see a physician.

Diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome is made by your doctor based on the irritable bowel syndrome information related to her by you. Other tests, like a colonoscopy or a stool analysis may be ordered by your doctor to rule out other conditions of the bowel that may be the cause of your symptoms.

Symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome can be managed by avoiding triggers, exercising on a regular basis and reducing the amount of stress in your life. Some trial and error and keeping a food diary will be needed to figure out what your triggers are and may not be pleasant but once triggers are determined you will know what foods to avoid. Make and keep a list of your trigger foods handy until you get them memorized.

Medication treatment of choice is based on your worst symptom. If you get diarrhea the most then a medication like Imodium may be helpful to you. Milk of magnesia can be used for constipation and the pain management that is best for you will be determined by your doctor.

Antidepressants or anxiolytics may be prescribed by your doctor if it is determined that depression or anxiety are triggers for your irritable bowel syndrome.

If traditional medications are not helpful then you can investigate possible herbal remedies that may offer you some relief. Talk to the owner of your local health food store or make an appointment with a naturopath. They are skilled in alternative medicine and herbal remedies that may make your condition more tolerable and allow you to significantly reduce any disruption to your daily activities.

Hopefully this irritable bowel syndrome information will help you in effectively managing the most unpleasant disorder.

Health: Irritable Bowel Syndrome And Constipation – Keep Your Life
health

When you have irritable bowel syndrome and constipation is your biggest problem, there are several things you can do to relieve this problem. Irritable bowel syndrome is a disorder of the intestines that causes abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation, flatulence and bloating. There is no concern that irritable bowel syndrome causes cancer or changes the intestines in any way but those who have irritable bowel syndrome know that this disorder can be very distressing and can affect a person’s life in a very negative sense.

Changing the way you eat may be necessary not only to control irritable bowel syndrome but the constipation that accompanies this disorder of the bowel. Eating a diet rich in fiber, can help relieve the constipation. Fiber can be found in fresh fruits and vegetables and whole grain breads and cereals. Your daily intake of fiber should equal approximately 30 grams per day.

You may have found that in order to effectively treat your irritable bowel syndrome you have had to cut out most of the dairy foods you have eaten in the past. This can be of benefit to you when dealing with irritable bowel syndrome and constipation also because dairy foods, like cheese, have been known to contribute to constipation.

Drink plenty of water, at least the recommended eight, 8 ounce glasses per day. Increased fluid intake will help your colon absorb the water it needs to relieve or even prevent constipation. Stay away from coffee and other caffeinated beverages because caffeine is what is called a diuretic and can have a drying effect on your body, therefore increasing the likelihood you will develop constipation.

Get regular exercise. All you need is 30 minutes of some type of aerobic exercise 3 times per week. You will be surprised how this small amount of exercise will make such a big difference in how you feel and when the constipation is relieved and you start having regular bowel movements you will feel even better. You do not need to go join a gym either, just start taking walks after dinner or if it works better for you then take your walk in the morning. Start your day out right.

If you find that your constipation does not get relieved by any of these methods then you may need to resort to medications to get relief. There are plenty of over the counter laxatives you can try. If the decision is too confusing though, get some advice from your doctor to find out what he recommends. You may only need to take a laxative one time so you have a bowel movement and clear up the problem. Then the other methods detailed above may work better for you. Always take your medications as directed or as prescribed by your doctor.

Once you start the above methods do not stop them abruptly. If you do then basically you will send your system into a type of shock and the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome and constipation will return and may be worse than they were to begin with.

Health: Irritable Bowel Medication – Can Make You Feel Right
health

After being diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome, you may want to talk with your doctor about an irritable bowel medication that will help control your symptoms. The medication your doctor prescribes will depend on the symptom you have that is most prevalent. A medication that can help control your symptoms is the most important factor to consider so you can restore your quality of life and you can carry on with your day to day activities.

If the most prevalent symptom you have is diarrhea, then your doctor will most likely prescribe an anti-diarrheal medication like Lomotil or recommend you buy Imodium over the counter. Both of these medications decrease the motion of the intestines. Your doctor will more than likely also suggest that you watch what you eat and make other lifestyle changes so you aren’t depending totally on the medication.

As a woman and you have severe diarrhea that has not responded to these medications, your doctor may prescribe Alosetron as your irritable bowel medication. There are also bile acid binding medications which prevent bile, excreted by the gall bladder, from stimulating the intestines and decreases the frequency of diarrhea.

Perhaps on the other hand, your major problem is constipation you’ll need a different medications in order to relieve it. First, try a good source of fiber and a stool softener like Dulcolax to relieve your constipation. If you have a mild form of irritable bowel syndrome a fiber supplement and stool softener may be all you need.

When you do not get relief from these medications and your doctor thinks you need a stronger medication, there are several options to choose from. Stimulant laxatives, like Senna, irritate the bowel lining and can cause cramping so they are not well tolerated by a lot of people and may not work well for you. Stimulant laxatives should not be used long term as they can cause some dependence. You just want to fix a short term problem and not need a laxative to have a regular bowel movement.

Milk of Magnesia, Lactulose and Polyethylene Glycol all aid in the retention of fluid in the intestines and drawing fluid from outside the intestines to ease the passage of stool. Your doctor may prescribe Amitiza for the most severe cases which also increases the amount of fluid in the intestines. Bentyl can help with the pain caused by spasms related to irritable bowel syndrome.

Since no one knows exactly what causes IBS and speculation is there are several causes, like depression for one, an antidepressant like Imipramine or Amitriptyline may be useful to treat not only depression symptoms but pain and diarrhea as well, just be careful because a side effect of these medications is constipation. So take them with a full glass of water and increase your daily fluid intake to prevent this side effect. You do not want to go from one extreme to the other when treating your irritable bowel syndrome with an irritable bowel medication.
